| art4ashes  FEDERATION SQUARE MELBOURNE art4ashes sculptures were on display in the BMW Edge Theatre walkway, around the perimeter of the stage, as part of the RAV Illuminated by Fire Event in The Light in Winter Spectacular.  Kathryn, and all the Illuminated by Fire artists directed informative tours around their own projects, from June 29 until July 3, 2011. The art4ashes event was a very moving occasion for the many attendees, involving speeches, a candle lighting memory ceremony and an uplifting song tribute especially written for the exhibition.    Kathryn's descriptive speech acknowledged all the participants. Donna Jackson explained about the background of the Illuminated by Fire project and how art4ashes fitted into the concept regarding the many different ways to relate to and respect fire in our lives. .jpg) The finely detailed work in the participant's sculptures was much admired and had helped them in a very positive way deal with the loss of their loved ones, through time to think about them.  .jpg)     Residents for whom Black Saturday fires had destroyed their home or studio had the opportunity to ackowledge their connection to each other in the sculpture and in the candle Memory Ceremony.    And the grand finale was the moving rendition of Wait for Tomorrow by talented composer, Scott Cameron. Poignant lyrics by Kathleen McLennan resonated through the chapel in superb quality of voice. .jpg) As a partner in this project, the Kyneton Community and Learning Centre was also the Preview Exhibition venue during the Daffodil and Arts Festival on the 11th and 12th of September. Their brand new complex showcased the collection of sculptures as works-in-progress. art4ashes blog on RAV Storyboard  Click on Illuminated by Fire for Promo Video Illuminated by Fire is a project about the places we care about and the story and role of fire within those places. Working across 11 different locations in Victoria, the project aims to share stories, increase our understanding and to create astonishing art in various forms and media. It will explore connections between people and place, using a creative approach to provoke discussion about living sustainably in the most bush fire prone region of the world. The significance of Black Saturday fires will be addressed in an artistic community enhancing manner. A two year project initiated by Regional Arts Victoria, 'Illuminated by Fire' will be delivered in partnership with the Neighbourhood House and Learning Centre (NHLC) network. It will embed an artist-in-residence in eleven locations across regional Victoria - from the rugged coastal Portland in the west, Hamilton, Ballarat, Creswick, Kyneton, Maldon, Swan Hill on the northern border with NSW, Flowerdale, Hurstbridge to Briagolong and Lakes Entrance on the coast in the far east of the state.  A local workshop program engaged participants through a staged process beginning with the sharing and development of stories in relation to fire, to a local presentation outcome (November 2010) and finally to a site-specific multi media installation in Melbourne (2011).  Illuminated by Fire is a RAV project supported by the Australia Council, the Australian Government's arts funding and advisory body, through its Community Partnerships Section; the Victorian Government through Arts Victoria and the Community Support Fund; the Office of the Emergency Services Commissioner and the Harold Mitchell Foundation.       Regional Arts Victoria's Managing Director - Lindy Allen, Artistic Director - Donna Jackson, Film maker - Malcolm McKinnon and Project Co-ordinator - Joe Toohey launched the 11 projects at Flowerdale on Saturday, 29th May to RAV Patron, Professor David de Kretser AC, Governor of Victoria.    A highlight of the occasion was the lighting of ceremonial fires in black drums by each of the artists representing their projects. Peter Bachelor, Minister for the Arts stood in for a missing artist. The ceremony was lead by Peter Auty, CFA Captain of Flowerdale (who has a tile made in his name in the AFTER project).The occasion was well received by the crowd.
